Founded in North Carolina in 2002, DAVENPORT has completed countless, notable projects. As a result, DAVENPORT is engaged by both government agencies and private sector clients to solve, mitigate and eliminate challenges related to traffic, parking, pedestrians, and roadways; and assist clients in dealing with environmental impact issues. These projects range from providing full service transportation engineering to Tanger Outlets in Mebane, NC to providing traffic signing & pavement marking plans for the 2.1 billion dollar VDOT Elizabeth River Tunnels project in Norfolk, VA (featured above) to supporting the environmental remediation efforts at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC.

Livingston Street Complete Street Improvements, Asheville, NC


DAVENPORT was selected to provide transportation engineering and design services for the complete street transformation of Livingston Street and a portion of Depot Street in Asheville. The City of Asheville desired to make the street safer and more comfortable for pedestrians, cyclists and transit users. The project has a unique set of challenges in that the work must be completed within an aggressive six month time frame and the improvements cannot involve any right-of-way acquisition. These conditions are to stay within the time line of the TIGER VI grant the City was awarded for both this project and several other transportation projects in the City. In addition to this tight time line and right-of-way constraints, DAVENPORT is working closely with the City of Asheville, stakeholders, and the community along the corridor to ensure the specific needs and concerns for the corridor are addressed.


Currently in progress, DAVENPORT's scope of work includes public involvement, traffic engineering, environmental services and NEPA Environmental Assessment, conceptual roadway design, full roadway design, sedimentation and erosion control design, and storm drainage design.

CITY OF JACKSONVILLE DOWNTOWN CIRCULATION STUDY - JACKSONVILLE, NC

DAVENPORT conducted a circulation study for the downtown area of Jacksonville, NC. This multi-modal study included considerations for all modes of transportation including vehicles, trucks, buses, bicycles and pedestrians. The goal of the study is to improve circulation, interconnectivity and the area's overall cohesiveness and vibrancy.



In order to facilitate a better flow and circulation of traffic in the downtown area and improve connectivity of the areas along Old Bridge Street to New Bridge Street, DAVENPORT recommended converting Court Street to two-way travel between Old Bridge and New Bridge Streets. This improvement will take advantage of recent Court Street improvements at the new Center for Public Safety, which involved the extension of Court Street to Marine Boulevard. Opening up Court Street to two-way travel between Old Bridge and New Bridge Streets will provide the opportunity for traffic to utilize Court Street to access this new signal at Marine Boulevard, and improve circulation and connectivity of the downtown network.



Two roundabouts were recommended along New Bridge Street which will replace existing traffic signals. The roundabouts are anticipated to improve operations and fit within the right-of-way with lane reduction concept plan changes on New Bridge Street. The roundabouts can also provide other benefits such as traffic calming and help promote a cohesive downtown.


Recommendations to create a vibrant, pedestrian / bicycle / transit friendly downtown could include the following (to name a few):


  • Extend Chaney Street Trail to New Bridge Street.
  • Sidewalk improvements (new sidewalks, wider sidewalks, etc.)
  • Bulb outs
  • High-visibility or decorative, stamped crosswalks
  • Sharrows
  • Enhanced bus stop / shelters, particularly at busy stops, and ADA accessible


  • DAVENPORT is working closely with key stakeholders including the Downtown Planning Committee. DAVENPORT is preparing 3-dimentional, street level photographic renderings to aid the City in educating residents on the proposed roadway changes.




    Other aspects of the study included an analysis of traffic and crash data; recommendations for bicycle, pedestrian and public transportation improvements; recommendations for enhanced streetscaping; and conceptual geometric design for roadway improvement alternatives.

    DAVENPORT and SciWorks Team Up for Engineering Day


    It's always exciting to see the fun side of Engineering, but it is especially rewarding to share the passion of our profession with others. DAVENPORT was thrilled to partner with SciWorks to present "Engineering Day" to several middle school groups from nearby schools. We enjoyed our time teaching the science behind imploding aluminum cans, floating paper clips in aluminum foil, building the highest newspaper tower, keeping eggs from breaking under extreme forces, and many more hands-on activities. Thanks SciWorks for this fun opportunity!

    DAVENPORT is thrilled to announce the addition of its 11th office to the Southeast! Located in Jacksonville, FL this will be the firm’s second office within the Sunshine State (in addition to Pensacola, FL). Our firm has chosen the right person for the job. Jeremy Runkle, PE, MBA will serve as the Director of the Jacksonville Regional Office. Mr. Runkle has extensive experience in the field of transportation engineering and has significant experience on notable design-driven multimillion dollar projects.

     

    Jeremy comes to DAVENPORT with over 10 years of experience providing transportation engineering services including proficiency in roadway design, construction plans preparation, CADD, project documentation, and cost estimating. Mr. Runkle’s specialties include geometric design, intersection design, interchange design, traffic operations including signing and pavement markings, ADA compliance, and bicycle facilities, with additional experience in pavement design, drainage design, and maintenance of traffic design.

    CITY OF WINSTON-SALEM MEADOWLARK DRIVE ROADWAY IMPROVEMENTS - WINSTON-SALEM, NC

    DAVENPORT was selected by the City of Winston-Salem to design improvements to approximately two miles of Meadowlark Drive between Country Club Road and Robinhood Road. As the first major project under a recently passed bond, the City proposed a 3-lane curb and gutter roadway to improve the primarily two-lane undivided open section roadway. The City also desired to provide bicycle lanes and sidewalks along the corridor.



    After initial meetings with the City of Winston-Salem, DAVENPORT learned there was not enough time to perform a feasibility study. It was also discovered that parts of the existing roadway were outside of the City of Winston-Salem limits which limited the City’s ability to obtain the needed right-of-way to accommodate the desired improvements. In addition, the existing speed limit on the roadway was too high to accommodate bicycles. DAVENPORT’s staff quickly went to work, conducting preliminary engineering work in order to develop an innovative solution. Within two weeks of selection,DAVENPORT was able to present a conceptual design which integrated complete street concepts while maintaining vehicle traffic. DAVENPORT’s proposed solution included widening one side of the road and the addition of a 10-foot multi-use path in lieu of sidewalks. This option addressed the challenges previously discovered and provided for a safer, more economical solution. The City accepted DAVENPORT’s concept and authorized the team to proceed with the design plans.

    WINSTON-SALEM/FORSYTH COUNTY SCHOOLS PEDESTRIAN AND TRAFFIC IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT - WINSTON-SALEM, NC

    DAVENPORT was retained by Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools to provide transportation engineering services for proposed pedestrian and traffic improvements along Northwest Boulevard at Wiley Middle School and RJ Reynolds High School. The multischool campus is located in a highly congested area, and has experienced significant parking and safety issues.



    The Reynolds High School site has limited parking within the site for buses, students and employees, leading many students to use parallel parking along both sides of Northwest Boulevard. Students are often crossing the adjacent railroad tracks, or weaving between traffic to access a tunnel leading to the campus. In addition, current on street parking is posing potential hazards to cyclists traveling this route.



    The firm’s recommendation of removing parallel parking spaces will reduce cycling hazards and the implementation of Reverse Angle Parking on one side of the road will also reduce potential conflict points for cyclists along the corridor. DAVENPORT’s scope of work includes on-site investigation, preliminary concept development, comprehensive public involvement, conceptual design, roadway design, pavement marking plans and construction support services.
