The Winston-Salem Northern Beltway Interchange Traffic Impact Study/ Development Mitigation Plan was completed for the City of Winston-Salem, NC.  The study area included several hundred acres surrounding the proposed interchange.  The purpose of this project was to develop a supplemental master plan to guide how this proposed interchange would develop.  Access management was critical to preserve the capacity of the project after completion.  Davenport Transportation Consulting (DTC, formerly JDE) analyzed different future scenarios with various land uses and square footages to determine how much additional traffic could be accommodated before roadway improvements would be necessary.  Roadway improvements were then recommended to allow for the estimated full build out potential of the area. These included a “Superstreet” alternative.  This would allow for the same level of service on this facility with four lanes as opposed to a traditional design with six lanes.  This project involved significant negotiations with NCDOT as well as public involvement.
