University of NC Wilmington Traffic Signal Design, Wilmington, NC
In August 2006, Davenport Transportation Consulting (DTC, formerly John Davenport Engineering) contracted with UNCW to provide traffic signal design plans for two locations on campus. For the signal at the intersection of Hamilton Drive and Hurst Drive, and we provided a plan documenting the existing conditions (as-built plan). For the signal at the intersection of Randall Drive and Racine Drive/Crews Drive, we provided both an as-built plan and a proposed plan with upgrades to the pedestrian crossing signals. Those pedestrian upgrades have since been implemented.

In January 2010, DTC contracted with UNCW to provide a Transportation Impact Analysis for the intersection of Randall Drive and Racine Drive/Crews Drive due to traffic congestion and safety concerns. Our study included crash history analysis, collision diagram preparation, pedestrian activity summary, and intersection analysis and improvement recommendations. The recommended improvements included options for UNCW to phase in improvements beginning with signal modifications which could be followed by turn lane storage lengthening.

This is a current and on-going project as we are now moving into the design phase with regard to the recommended improvements to include construction cost estimating, signal modification design, roadway design, and construction support services.
